Since the beginning of this year, the export volume of soda ash has increased significantly. From January to September, the cumulative export volume of domestic soda ash was 1.4487 million tons, an increase of 853,100 tons or 143.24% over the same period last year. The export volume of soda ash increased significantly, making the domestic soda ash inventory significantly lower than the same period last year and the 5-year average level. Recently, the market has paid more attention to the phenomenon that the export volume of soda ash has increased greatly.
Data from the General Administration of Customs shows that from January to September 2022, the cumulative value of domestic soda ash imports was 107,200 tons, a decrease of 40,200 tons or 27.28% from the same period last year; the cumulative value of exports was 1,448,700 tons, an increase of 85.31% from the same period last year. 10,000 tons, an increase of 143.24%. In the first nine months, the average monthly export volume of soda ash reached 181,100 tons, far exceeding the average monthly export volume of 63,200 tons in 2021 and 106,000 tons in 2020.
In the same trend as the increase in export volume, from January to September 2022, the export price of soda ash showed a clear upward trend. From January to September 2022, the average export prices of soda ash are 386, 370, 380, 404, 405, 416, 419, 421, and 388 US dollars per ton. The average export price of soda ash in August was close to the highest price in 10 years.

From the perspective of overseas demand, benefiting from the development of the new energy industry around the world, the increase in photovoltaic installation speed has led to an increase in the demand for photovoltaic glass, which in turn has led to a substantial expansion of photovoltaic glass production capacity, and the demand for soda ash has also increased. According to the latest forecast of the China Photovoltaic Association, the global installed photovoltaic capacity will be 205-250GW in 2022, and the demand for photovoltaic glass is roughly estimated to be 14.5 million tons, an increase of about 500,000 tons over last year. Considering that the market outlook is relatively optimistic, and the release of photovoltaic glass production capacity is ahead of the increase in demand, it is estimated that the increase in global photovoltaic glass production in 2022 will increase the incremental demand for soda ash at around 600,000-700,000 tons.
