This week (April 20-27), domestic acetic acid prices saw a significant decline. Raw material methanol prices fluctuated within a range, providing limited cost support. On the supply side, acetic acid plant operating rates increased, and companies showed strong willingness to ship, but downstream demand remained weak, resulting in sluggish market trading and increased acetic acid inventories. Before the holiday, to facilitate inventory clearance, acetic acid negotiations shifted towards lower prices. Simultaneously, end-user demand was sluggish, downstream prices continued to weaken, and market sentiment was bearish, leading to a downward trend in acetic acid prices.
The methanol market fluctuated within a range this week. As of April 27, the average domestic market price had fallen by 1.37% compared to April 20. The spot market for methanol mainly declined, with downstream buyers resisting high prices and purchasing only as needed. Some companies experienced moderate sales, putting downward pressure on methanol prices. Tight port inventories provided some support for spot prices, resulting in limited overall price fluctuations.
Downstream acetic anhydride prices continued to decline, with the average ex-factory price falling by 10.69% from April 20th to 27th. On the supply side, acetic anhydride plants operated smoothly, with companies primarily focused on selling off inventory. Downstream demand for high-priced products was moderate, resulting in weak market activity. The decline in raw material acetic acid prices also negatively impacted acetic anhydride, leading to a weak fundamental outlook and a continued downward trend in prices.
Market outlook: Acetic acid producers are clearly looking to reduce their inventory, and the focus of negotiations is shifting downwards. Downstream buyers are entering the market only as needed, resulting in insufficient demand support. The acetic acid market is pessimistic, and the market is expected to continue its weak trend before the holiday. The market supply situation will be a key factor to watch in the future.
