Sodium hydrosulfite
Sodium hydrosulfite, chemically known as sodium dithionite (Na₂S₂O₄), is a white, granular crystalline or pale yellow powder. It possesses strong reducing properties and is widely used in the food, textile, printing and dyeing, and paper industries. As an important chemical raw material, sodium hydrosulfite occupies an irreplaceable position in industrial production due to its unique chemical properties and multifunctional applications. However, its use also carries certain safety risks, requiring strict adherence to operating procedures to ensure safety.
Sodium dithionite without crystallization is a white, fine-grained crystal, while that containing crystallization is a pale yellow powder (Na₂S₂O₄·2H₂O). It is odorless or has a slight sulfur dioxide odor. Sodium dithionite is chemically reactive and has strong reducing properties; it oxidizes immediately in air, readily absorbs moisture, generates heat, and deteriorates, decomposing to release H₂S and SO₂, both toxic gases. It will burn upon contact with oxidizers or open flames, releasing SO₂ and sulfur vapors, and may even cause an explosion.
