The soda ash market weakened and declined in February. On the supply side, the operating rate of soda ash plants remained largely unchanged, maintaining a high level, resulting in ample market supply and significant inventory pressure for enterprises. To boost sales before the holiday, soda ash prices were lowered. On the demand side, glass industry production lines underwent maintenance, leading to reduced operating rates. Enterprises primarily focused on depleting existing inventories, further weakening support for soda ash prices. With both supply and demand weak, soda ash prices continued to decline throughout the month.
On the demand side: According to the commodity analysis system of Business Society, glass prices were relatively strong this month, with the average market price rising from 13.10 yuan/square meter to 13.38 yuan/square meter, an overall increase of 2.14%. During the month, some glass production lines underwent cold repairs, resulting in a decrease in the industry’s operating rate. Downstream purchases were made on an as-needed basis, the market trading atmosphere was acceptable, and enterprises maintained a bullish sentiment, leading to a slight increase in glass prices.
Market Outlook: Currently, the operating rate of soda ash plants is relatively high, resulting in significant market inventory pressure. Downstream operating rates are not high, providing limited support for soda ash prices. In the short term, the soda ash market is expected to remain weak. However, some companies have maintenance plans in March, which may provide some support for price increases based on market sentiment. The soda ash market is expected to fluctuate and consolidate in the near future, depending on downstream demand.
