Hydrogen peroxide

Short Description:

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a colorless, odorless liquid with a bitter taste. It has a molecular weight of 34.01, a density of 1.44 g/cm³, a boiling point of 151.4 ℃, and a melting point of -0.46 ℃. It is soluble in water, ether, and alcohol; its aqueous solution is weakly acidic. It readily decomposes into water and oxygen, and is a strong oxidizing agent with both oxidizing and corrosive properties.

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. It is a colorless, transparent liquid with a slightly pungent odor, while pure hydrogen peroxide is a pale blue, viscous liquid. Its molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms. At room temperature and pressure, hydrogen peroxide is a colorless, transparent liquid with a density slightly greater than water, and is soluble in water, alcohols, ethers, and other solvents. Hydrogen peroxide has strong chemical reactivity and readily decomposes into water and oxygen, especially under light, heat, or in the presence of a catalyst, which significantly accelerates the decomposition rate. Its chemical properties are mainly characterized by strong oxidizing and reducing properties, and it can react with many organic and inorganic substances. Its aqueous solution is suitable for medical wound disinfection, environmental disinfection, and food disinfection. Under normal circumstances, it decomposes into water and oxygen, but the decomposition rate is extremely slow. Accelerating the reaction rate can be achieved by adding a catalyst—manganese dioxide—or by irradiation with short-wave radiation.

Application:

1.Wound disinfection and cleaning: 3% hydrogen peroxide is commonly used for initial disinfection of superficial wounds (such as abrasions and cuts). It destroys the cell structure of microorganisms by releasing oxygen foam and physically removes necrotic tissue and secretions, reducing the risk of infection. However, it is not recommended for deep wounds, large-area burns, or long-term use, as it may irritate tissue and delay healing.

2.Oral care: Diluted hydrogen peroxide (usually mixed with water at a 1:1 ratio or with a concentration below 1.5%) can be used as a mouthwash to help treat gingivitis and oral ulcers by inhibiting anaerobic bacteria and reducing inflammation. Rinse for about 30 seconds each time, then spit it out and rinse your mouth with water. Avoid swallowing. It is recommended to use it no more than 2-3 times a week to prevent disrupting the normal balance of oral flora.

3. Disinfection of object surfaces and environment: 3%-6% hydrogen peroxide can effectively inactivate bacteria, viruses (including coronavirus and influenza virus), and fungi. It is suitable for disinfecting hard surfaces such as medical devices, children's toys, and kitchen countertops. When using, allow the surface to come into contact with the solution for 5-10 minutes before wiping. Metal items should be dried promptly after disinfection to prevent corrosion.

4.Bleaching and Stain Removal: Hydrogen peroxide's strong oxidizing properties make it a natural bleaching agent, capable of removing organic stains such as blood, sweat, and tea from clothing, especially effective on white cotton and linen fabrics. It needs to be diluted (e.g., 1:10) before use, and local soaking should not exceed 30 minutes. Avoid contact with colored clothing to prevent fading.

5. Ear canal cleaning: Low-concentration (3%) hydrogen peroxide can soften earwax (tincture) and is used as an adjunct treatment for tincture impaction in the external auditory canal. During the procedure, tilt the head to the side and instill 1-5 drops. After the foaming stops, tilt the head to drain the earwax. Do not use on patients with tympanic membrane perforation, otitis media, or external auditory canal inflammation, as this may cause dizziness or spread of infection.

6.Other uses: In the medical field, hydrogen peroxide can also be used to treat inflammation caused by purulent otitis media, Vincent's stomatitis, etc.; in industrial or professional settings, it can be used to prepare disinfectants or treat medical waste.

Precautions for Use:

• Choose the appropriate concentration: 3% is typically used for medical purposes; for oral care, dilute to below 1.5%.

• Avoid contact with eyes, broken mucous membranes, and deep tissues.

• Shelf life is approximately one month after opening. Store in a cool, dark place.

• Do not mix with acidic cleaners (such as toilet cleaner) to prevent the generation of harmful gases.

• Individuals with sensitive skin should perform a small-area test before use. If a burning sensation occurs, rinse immediately with water.

• For severe wounds, deep infections, or suspected allergic reactions, seek medical attention promptly. Do not self-medicate or substitute professional treatment.
